From playful river otters to Gilded Age opulence, this Richmond’s treasure has something for everyone. The Maymont Mansion, the Dooley’s opulent Victorian-era home, includes original furnishings and a fascinating belowstairs exhibition. The Italian and Japanese gardens offer breathtaking beauty, and the arboretum boasts more than 200 species of trees and shrubs. The Robins Nature and Visitor Center features interactive exhibits and 13 giant aquariums with otters, turtles and fish as well as the Maymont Café. Wildlife exhibits house a number of species native to Virginia, including bison, deer, fox, bears, bald eagles and other birds of prey, and at the Children’s Farm, visitors can interact with goats, sheep, chickens and other farm animals. Carriage and Tram rides are available, weather permitting.

Grounds daily 10-7, Apr.-Oct.; 10-5, rest of year. Guided mansion tours available Tues.-Sun. noon-4:30; closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Dec. 24 & 25. Tram, carriage and hay wagon ride hours vary; private rides by appointment. Nature Center admission: $3 youth and adults/$2 children ages 4-12 and seniors ages 60+.
